Quick reference: every hour in Thai

Thai does not run one to twelve twice. The day is split into blocks, each with its own word, and the number you say is often not the number on the clock face.

How Thai time works

There are six blocks. Learn which block a time falls in and the rest is counting.

Early morning: ตี (1am to 5am)

ตี plus the number. ตีหนึ่ง is 1am, ตีห้า is 5am. The word ตี already means the small hours, so nothing else is needed.

Morning: โมงเช้า (6am to 11am)

The number, then โมง, then เช้า for morning. หกโมงเช้า is 6am. In practice the เช้า is usually dropped, which is covered below.

Midday: เที่ยง

เที่ยง on its own is noon. เที่ยงคืน is midnight.

Afternoon: บ่าย (1pm to 4pm)

Here บ่าย comes first. บ่ายโมง is 1pm, บ่ายสองโมง is 2pm, บ่ายสี่โมง is 4pm.

Evening: โมงเย็น (5pm and 6pm)

ห้าโมงเย็น is 5pm, หกโมงเย็น is 6pm.

Night: ทุ่ม (7pm to 11pm)

The counting restarts. หนึ่งทุ่ม is 7pm, not 1pm, and ห้าทุ่ม is 11pm. This is the block that catches people out, because the number never matches the clock face.

What Thai people actually say

Textbooks teach the full form. Everyday speech trims it, and the trimming follows a pattern rather than being random. This is the part most guides leave out.

เช้า gets dropped in the morning

From 6am to 11am, say หกโมง, not หกโมงเช้า. It works because a bare โมง is already understood as morning, so เช้า is telling you something you already know.

โมง gets dropped in the afternoon

From 1pm to 4pm, say บ่ายสอง, not บ่ายสองโมง. Here it is the other way round: บ่าย already marks the afternoon, so โมง is the redundant word.

เย็น stays, on the hour

At 5pm and 6pm the เย็น survives: ห้าโมงเย็น. Drop it and ห้าโมง could be taken as morning, so it is doing real work.

But on the half hour it goes anyway

Say ห้าโมงครึ่ง for 5:30pm, not ห้าโมงเย็นครึ่ง. The ambiguity is simply tolerated.

หกโมงครึ่ง means both 6:30am and 6:30pm

This is not a mistake, and it is worth getting comfortable with. Thai speakers do not resolve every ambiguity in the words themselves. If it matters, they ask, or they add the context another way.

If you are standing in a park at six in the evening and someone asks the time, nothing needs clarifying. If you are asking what time someone lands tomorrow, you say the part that matters.

Half past: ครึ่ง

Add ครึ่ง to the end of the hour. เจ็ดโมงครึ่ง is 7:30am, สองทุ่มครึ่ง is 8:30pm.

The older six-hour clock

You may hear the morning hours counted from 6am, so that 7am becomes หนึ่งโมงเช้า, literally the first hour of the morning, and 8am becomes สองโมงเช้า. This is more common in rural speech.

It is worth recognising, because ห้าโมงเช้า in that system is 11am, while ห้าโมงเย็น is 5pm. The forms taught above are the ones to use.
